What doesn’t kill you makes you Stronger

Embracing the Storms: How Challenges Shape Us into Stronger Christian Professionals

One of my favorite quotes is, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” As I reflect on my professional journey—the challenges I’ve faced, the lessons I’ve learned, and the dreams I continue to pursue—I realize that some of my greatest accomplishments were realized in the midst of life’s storms. While I enjoy the sunshine and the ease of success, I owe my growth, wisdom, and resilience to the difficult times that have refined me as a seasoned professional.

Many people look back on life’s struggles with lingering resentment, particularly toward those who may have contributed to their difficulties. However, I choose to see these challenges as steppingstones, catalysts for personal and professional growth. Today, I want to share two pivotal storms in my career that, rather than breaking me, became the wind beneath my wings, propelling me forward.

The First Storm: A Boss Who Pushed Me Beyond My Limits

Over two decades ago, as a young professional, I transitioned from the public sector into the private sector. I had big dreams and unwavering determination, yet I faced limitations. Though I held a General Certificate of Education in English Language, my writing skills were not where they needed to be. But I was prepared to go as far as hard work and persistence could take me.

Enter my unforgettable boss—a man whose first language was not English, yet he mastered it with precision. He had high expectations, and he made it clear that my writing skills were not up to his standard. Whenever he dictated a letter and I submitted an imperfect draft, he would throw it back onto my desk without a word. My colleagues pitied me, but I was determined to rise to the challenge.

Through sleepless nights, relentless practice, and fervent prayers for alertness, I honed my skills. There were days when I fought back tears, but I pressed on. Eventually, instead of a rejected document, I started receiving words of affirmation: “Good job.” “Well done.” Those small victories fueled my determination, and I worked even harder.

Looking back, I am deeply grateful for that experience. It cultivated in me an unshakable commitment to excellence. My boss did not just push me to master the English language—he stretched my capacity, challenged my limitations, and inspired me to develop an eye for detail. Because of that storm, I emerged stronger, more capable, and more confident. Today, I can work anywhere and deliver exceptional results. That once-intimidating boss? We became trusted friends, and I now appreciate the role he played in shaping my career.

The Second Storm: Navigating a Toxic Work Environment

Not all storms push you toward excellence—some challenge your very identity and resilience. At one point in my career, I worked under a leader who appeared kind, confident, and inclusive. Initially, I felt valued. However, I soon noticed an alarming pattern: No one challenged his ideas. Employees bit their tongues, even when he contradicted himself. Those who expressed differing opinions were quickly silenced, isolated, and discredited.

I was determined to remain neutral and professional, but I soon became a target. As the “honeymoon phase” of my employment ended, his once-positive affirmations turned into unrealistic expectations and undue criticism. His management style thrived on fear and manipulation, and my refusal to conform made me a threat.

The stress took a toll on my mental health. I developed coping strategies, sought therapy, and leaned into my faith for strength. I reminded myself daily of my value and refused to let his behavior define me. I educated myself about narcissistic leadership, maintained self-awareness, and documented everything for accountability. Eventually, the storm passed—he made an unexpected exit from the organization, and soon after, I moved on as well.

While the experience was painful, it was also transformative. It propelled me into my true purpose: leadership coaching. I became passionate about mentoring young professionals, equipping them with the tools to navigate workplace challenges while maintaining their integrity and confidence. That storm, though harsh, prepared me for a higher calling.

Embracing Your Storms: A Call to Christian Professionals

I don’t know what storm you are facing in your workplace. Maybe you feel undervalued, stifled, or even targeted. But let me encourage you: God uses storms to shape us. Some storms come to disrupt our comfort, to propel us into our next level of purpose. If you’re in a storm, don’t despair—embrace it. Learn from it. Grow through it.

As the Apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 5:3-4, “We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Your trials are not meant to destroy you; they are refining you, strengthening you, and preparing you for something greater.

So, stand firm. Pray through your challenges. Seek wisdom and mentorship. And remember: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
