The Power of Sisterhood: Strength, Support, and Success in Faith and Career
Long ago, when life was simple and filled with childhood adventures—playing dodgeball and jump rope, climbing mango trees, and fishing in the river near my grandfather’s land—I never could have imagined the impact my sisters would have on my personal and professional journey. We didn’t have the luxury of television, but we had each other. Pam, the eldest, was always off playing the guitar, but Jay, Wendy, and I were inseparable. We played, we learned, and we dreamed together.
Early Lessons in Leadership and Support
Even as children, our bond was built on support and encouragement. I took on the role of teacher, using a water drum as a chalkboard to prepare Jay for school. On rainy days, I transformed our bedroom into a fairytale world, captivating my sisters with stories of Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk. These moments, though seemingly insignificant, laid the foundation for leadership, mentorship, and the ability to inspire others—traits that would later define my professional and spiritual journey.
Protecting my sisters became second nature. My small stature didn’t stop me from standing up for them, and my frown often concealed the smile of a natural-born encourager. Even in the simplest ways—like styling their hair for dates or selecting their outfits—I learned the importance of preparation, confidence, and presentation, lessons that would translate into the professional world.
Sisterhood in Faith and Career
As we grew into adulthood, our relationship deepened. For a time, we had the rare privilege of working together, combining our skills and strengths. Like a well-synchronized team, we accomplished incredible things. Our shared faith was the glue that kept us bound together through life’s challenges. Though life has physically separated us across different countries, our bond remains unshaken.
A year ago, I visited Wendy in the United Kingdom. Time stood still as we reminisced about childhood, celebrated her incredible achievements—including earning a PhD and working in academia—and marveled at her wonderful family. As I wrote her a note before my departure, the old hymn by John Fawcett came to mind:
Blest be the tie that binds, Our hearts in (sisters’) love. The fellowship of kindred minds, Is like to that above. When we asunder part, It gives us inward pain. But we shall still be joined in heart, And hope to meet again.
The morning of my departure was bittersweet. I left Wendy to return home to Jay, torn between two places that both felt like home. But the love and support we share transcend distance, reinforcing the truth that God blesses us with relationships that sustain us in every season of life.
But as someone wisely said, “It is the going that makes the coming sweet.” Months later, we reunited when Wendy and her family came home for the summer. Cherishing our time together, we treated ourselves to a professional makeup session and a memorable photo shoot. Every moment spent with my sisters is a treasure—time that is always well spent.
The Professional Impact of a Strong Support System
Sisterhood—whether through blood, faith, or mentorship—plays a critical role in personal and professional success. It fosters confidence, resilience, and emotional well-being. In the workplace, this translates into collaboration, ethical leadership, and the courage to pursue dreams with unwavering faith.
As Christian professionals, we are called to be our sister’s (and brother’s) keeper. We are called to uplift, encourage, and push one another toward greatness. We may not always agree, but we respect each other’s differences and recognize the value of unwavering support.
Encouraging the Next Generation
I have instilled this truth in my daughter, ensuring she builds a bond with her sister from her father’s side. “One day, you’ll discover the value of having a sister,” I often remind her. Life is unpredictable, and the world can be harsh, but the love and support of a sister—biological or spiritual—can make all the difference.
