A Mantra for Success and Significance
“I will work so that I am easily missed and difficult to replace.” This has been a guiding principle in my professional journey for decades. Another one I live by is, whatever you do, you do for yourself. These words have shaped my work ethic, leadership style, and the legacy I strive to build every day.
Today, as I sit down to reflect, I do so after hours of investing in the growth of a group of supervisors within the company I serve. It was one of the many learning and development sessions I introduced as HR Director—a space where I get to witness transformation and growth firsthand.
I look forward to these sessions as much as the participants do. Teaching, mentoring, and pouring into others are the highlights of my day. There is nothing more fulfilling than breaking down complex learning modules and feeding them to eager minds, watching confidence blossom, and seeing individuals rise beyond their own expectations. This is my passion. This is my calling.
Finding Purpose in Work
While there are many aspects of human resources that no longer excite me, learning and development remain close to my heart. Conducting competency assessments, designing development plans, and stretching employees beyond their perceived limits bring me immense joy. Watching people grow is the most rewarding part of my career.
Recently, I took a moment to reflect on a significant transition in my journey—the day I said goodbye to one organization to join another. Among my parting gifts was a book filled with sentiments from my colleagues. To receive such heartfelt tributes while I could still acknowledge them was a humbling experience.
The cover read:
“Things are not going to be the same around here without you. Your contributions and expertise were invaluable to the team. Easily missed and hard to replace. Farewell, Karen James.”
Leaving a Legacy of Excellence
The first entry in the book was from the CEO:
“Thank you for your service to this organization. You have made a significant contribution, and it is better off for you being here. I wish you every success in your future. God bless.”
Many others followed:
“Your leadership and guidance have shaped our team in so many ways. We will truly miss you.”
“Your commitment to assisting others in achieving success is genuinely inspiring.”
“Your wisdom and guidance will be missed, but the seeds you’ve planted will continue to bloom.”
“You are an inspiration to me and many others. You are a ‘breath of fresh air.’”
A couple of hundred employees took the time to express their gratitude to an ordinary woman with extraordinary determination. As I read those words, I laughed, I cried, and I laughed some more. Even today, revisiting that book warms my heart. I did what I set out to do—to make a difference and leave a lasting impact.
The Power of Influence
People may forget your job title, your projects, and even your achievements, but they will never forget how you made them feel. Every day, you are given an opportunity to impact lives—seize it. Whether celebrating successes, delivering tough feedback, or navigating difficult conversations, always aim to uplift and encourage.
There is no perfect workplace. Challenges will arise. Wisdom and good judgment may not always prevail. But regardless of the circumstances, commit to working in such a way that when you leave, you are easily missed and difficult to replace.
This is the essence of true leadership. This is the heart of a Christian professional.
