My Story
Overcoming Fear: A Lesson in Faith and Courage
Fear has a way of holding us back from opportunities to serve, grow, and experience the fullness of God’s plan for our lives. Sometimes, we are called to step beyond our comfort zones and into the unknown—where faith meets action. My journey in overcoming my fear of needles taught me a valuable lesson in trusting God and choosing selflessness over fear.
A Prayer for Purpose
On Monday, February 26, 2019, I read 1 John 3:18 during my morning devotion: “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” That verse spoke to my heart, and I prayed, “Father, thank You for choosing to work through me today. I submit myself and my resources to You. Show me ways to be a blessing to others. Amen.”
Little did I know, God would answer that prayer in an unexpected way.
A Call for Help
Around 11 a.m., I noticed a missed call from a friend and returned it without hesitation. After exchanging greetings, she shared why she had called: “My dad is in the hospital, and he needs blood. Several family members are unable to donate. If you can assist, I’d be so grateful.”
My heart sank. Oh God, I thought. My fear of needles came rushing in like a flood. For years, I had avoided anything that involved injections, let alone voluntarily giving blood. As my mind raced for a way out, I realized—this was my moment to live out the verse I had read earlier.
I had a choice: let fear dictate my response or step forward in faith. “Sure, I’ll do it,” I finally said.
Confronting Fear with Faith
For the next two hours, my mind waged war against itself. What if my blood levels aren’t high enough? What if I feel weak? Then another thought surfaced: If the roles were reversed, wouldn’t I want someone to help me? The truth of 1 John 3:18 fueled my resolve. Love isn’t just spoken—it’s demonstrated through action.
When I arrived at the hospital, my nerves were evident. The attendant explained the process: “First, we’ll prick your finger to check your hemoglobin levels. That’s the worst part. If you can handle that, the rest is easy.”
I winced at the prick but pushed forward. “You passed the first test,” she said. Next came a series of questions. Then, I was led to a bed where my blood would be drawn. “This is your last chance to back out,” the attendant smiled. But by this time, I had made up my mind.
Finding a suitable vein wasn’t easy. My arm was slapped, tapped, and examined before a small vein was found. The attendant gently held the needle in place, never once complaining despite the discomfort of maintaining her position. Watching her dedication, I realized—the person deserving of praise wasn’t me but the attendant, whose patience and perseverance made the process smoother for nervous donors like me.
The Reward of Generosity
We often magnify negative experiences, but I wanted to highlight the kindness and professionalism I encountered. I wrote a letter to commend the attendant, acknowledging her effort.
I won’t say I became a fan of needles overnight, but something changed within me. That experience helped me shift from fear to faith. More importantly, it reinforced the truth that generosity—whether through time, resources, or even something as simple as a blood donation—is its own reward.
Stepping Beyond Fear
Maybe you’ve been asked to do something outside your comfort zone—donate blood, serve in a ministry, or take a leap of faith in your career. Fear whispers excuses, but faith calls us to action. Isaiah 41:10 says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
The decision to push past fear becomes easier when we shift our perspective. Imagine yourself in need—how would you want others to respond? That simple mindset change can transform hesitation into boldness.
I challenge you today: what fear has been holding you back? Whether it’s fear of failure, rejection, or even something as small as a needle—God is greater. Step forward in faith, and you’ll be amazed at the strength He provides.
