The two dogs that stole our hearts are amazing companions.

From Reluctance to Unconditional Love: My Journey with Duke and Travis

Introduction

If you had asked me a few years ago whether I was an animal lover, I would have quickly said no. But life has a way of surprising us, and today, I find myself the proud parent of two incredible Poodles—Duke and Travis. These two have not only captured my heart but have become an irreplaceable part of my home and life. Never did I imagine that two four-legged companions would teach me so much about love, responsibility, and even faith.

Maybe you, too, have been hesitant about something, only to later realize it was a blessing in disguise. Perhaps God is nudging you toward something outside your comfort zone. My story is a testimony to the unexpected joys that come when we embrace the unknown.

A Reluctant Start

Years ago, when my daughter was just a baby, we had a dog named Snoopy. While I played a role in bringing him home, I kept my distance. I saw pet ownership as more of a duty than a joy. My ex-husband adored Snoopy, but I never developed an attachment. My daughter, however, loved him.

Over the years, her love for dogs only grew stronger. She spent hours watching dog videos, begging for a pet of her own. My response was always, “When you’re older and can take care of it yourself.” But God was preparing my heart, even when I didn’t realize it.

A Promise Fulfilled

At nine years old, my daughter’s wish for a dog became more persistent. We had lived in various places, including an estate where the landlords had three dogs—Sam, Sandy, and Lucky. She bonded with them instantly, reinforcing her desire for a pet of her own. I finally told her, “When we settle back home, we’ll get a dog.”

Years passed, and we finally settled. The first thing she asked was, “Now can we get a dog?” This time, my answer was a firm yes. I made it clear that the responsibility would be hers, but little did I know how much this journey would change me.

Duke’s Arrival

The day finally came. We picked up a tiny, six-week-old bundle of energy. From the moment Duke entered our home, I knew he was special. Though he was my daughter’s dog, I found myself rushing home after work, eager to experience his love and excitement.

Not long after, the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and we were home much more. A month into Duke’s arrival, my daughter’s college resumed in-person classes. We worried about Duke being alone all day, so we made the decision to adopt another dog—Travis.

Welcoming Travis

Travis, a timid two-year-old, had been bullied by the other dogs in his previous home. When we brought him home, it was clear he was frightened. Duke, ever the confident one, wasn’t thrilled about sharing his space. But slowly, through love and patience, Travis transformed. The insecure dog who once hid under vehicles became a confident, self-assured companion.

Scripture reminds us in 1 John 4:18 that perfect love drives out fear. Watching Travis grow into his full personality was a living testament to this truth. With time, patience, and love, he realized he was safe, valued, and cherished.

The Joy They Bring

Duke and Travis have filled our home with laughter, love, and joy. They greet us eagerly at the door, wait patiently for us to return from work, and even have their own routines. Duke, being the leader, races down the driveway to welcome us, while Travis follows at his own pace. They have taught me lessons in loyalty, patience, and unconditional love.

They are also deeply intuitive. On days when my heart is heavy, they sense it. They climb into my lap, offering silent comfort. Their presence has been a reminder of God’s love—constant, unwavering, and always present.

Saying Goodbye (Temporarily)

When we finally planned a vacation after years of staying home, one major concern arose: Who would care for our boys? Leaving them wasn’t easy, but we found a trusted friend to care for them.

In the days leading up to our departure, Duke sensed something was different. He whined, pouted, and clung to us. The day we dropped them off, our hearts broke. As we watched the car drive away with them, we wept. We made sure they had everything they needed, including a recorded video from my daughter telling them we would return.

Every single day of our trip, we checked in on them. Knowing they were loved and safe gave us peace. But as our vacation came to an end, our excitement grew—we were going home to Duke and Travis. The thought of reuniting with them made leaving family a little easier.

Lessons in Love and Trust

Our reunion was everything we hoped for—pure joy, excited jumps, and wagging tails. They had missed us as much as we missed them. Their love is fierce, genuine, and without condition.

I never thought I’d be the owner of not one but two dogs, yet here I am, unable to imagine life without them. God works in mysterious ways. Sometimes, the very thing we resist is the blessing He has prepared for us.
