Are we expected to behave differently than our unbelieving colleagues? How about punctuality and attendance—should we follow the crowd if everyone else arrives late and leaves early? What about using company time and resources for church-related activities?
These are real issues that many Christian professionals face, and today, we’re going to examine them from a biblical perspective.
Are Christian Professionals Held to a Higher Standard?
The short answer is yes! As Christians, we are called to live differently—not just in church, but in every area of our lives, including our professional conduct.
📖 Colossians 3:23 – “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
This verse reminds us that our work is ultimately an act of worship. Even though we report to human bosses, our true employer is God. This means that our professionalism, work ethic, and integrity should reflect Christ, setting us apart from the world.
Jesus Himself said in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Our colleagues—whether believers or not—should be able to see a difference in the way we work. That difference should not be arrogance or self-righteousness but rather excellence, honesty, and dependability.
Punctuality and Attendance: Should We Follow the Crowd?
One of the easiest ways to stand out as a Christian professional is by being reliable in areas like punctuality and attendance.
In many workplaces, it’s common for employees to:
- Arrive late and leave early.
- Call in sick when they just do not feel like working.
- Take long breaks and waste time during work hours.
But is it okay for a Christian professional to do the same, just because “everyone else is doing it”?
📖 Luke 16:10 – “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”
God calls us to be faithful in small things. Arriving on time, working diligently, and respecting company policies may seem minor, but they speak volumes about our character.
When we consistently show up on time and give our best effort, we demonstrate integrity. Even if no one else is watching, God sees our faithfulness. And when promotions and leadership opportunities arise, guess who will stand out? The one who has proven to be trustworthy.
Using Company Time for Church-Related Work
This is a tough one, but let’s address it head-on. Many Christian professionals struggle with balancing their work responsibilities and church commitments. Sometimes, we might feel tempted to use company time to:
- Prepare sermons or Bible studies.
- Organize church events.
- Make personal calls for ministry purposes.
While these activities are valuable, they should not be done at the expense of our employer’s time.
📖 Ecclesiastes 3:1 – “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
If we are being paid to work for a company, that time belongs to them. Doing church-related work during work hours is essentially stealing time—and the Bible is clear that stealing is wrong, no matter the justification (Exodus 20:15).
However, this does not mean we cannot be a witness at work! Instead of using work time for church business, we can:
- Use lunch breaks for ministry calls or Bible study.
- Be intentional in our conversations, offering encouragement to colleagues.
- Lead by example through our work ethic and character.
When we honor our employer’s time, we also honour God.
Using Office Supplies for Church Business
Another ethical issue that sometimes arises is the use of company resources—such as paper, printers, or office supplies—for church-related activities. Some might argue, “It is for a good cause! It is the work of Christ!”
But let us be honest: Does the end justify the means?
📖 Romans 13:7 – “Give to everyone what you owe them… if respect, then respect; if honour, then honour.”
Company resources are meant for company business. Using them for personal or church activities—without permission—is misuse of company property. It may seem harmless, but it’s a matter of integrity.
If we need to print church flyers or make copies for ministry work, the right approach is to:
- Ask for permission from management.
- Use personal resources or church funds.
- Find cost-effective alternatives outside of work.
As Christians, we must be above reproach in all areas, even when it comes to small things like office supplies.
Living Above Reproach in the Workplace
Ultimately, being a Christian professional means living in a way that reflects Christ—not just in what we say, but in how we work.
Here are some practical ways to stand out as a Christian professional:
- Be on time – Punctuality shows respect for others and for the responsibilities entrusted to us.
- Work diligently – Give your best effort, knowing that your work is an offering to God.
- Maintain integrity – Avoid dishonest shortcuts, even if everyone else is taking them.
- Separate work and ministry – Serve God wholeheartedly, but not at the expense of your employer’s trust.
- Respect company policies – Follow ethical guidelines, demonstrating that Christians can be trusted in all things.
📖 1 Corinthians 10:31 – “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
When we uphold these principles, we do not just succeed professionally—we become powerful witnesses for Christ in the workplace.
Final Thoughts
Are Christian professionals called to a higher standard? Absolutely. God expects us to be different—not for the sake of being different, but so that our lives can be a testimony of His righteousness.

- Are there areas where you have been compromising because “everyone else is doing it”?
- How can you be a stronger witness through your professionalism and integrity?
