Today, we’re tackling a crucial question: Are you a Christian professional, or are you a professional trying to be a Christian? At first glance, these two phrases might seem similar, but the distinction between them can shape the way we live out our faith in our careers.

Let’s break this down and explore what it really means to be a Christian professional versus a professional who tries to be a Christian.

Defining the Terms

1. The Christian Professional
   A Christian professional is someone whose identity in Christ is their foundation, and everything they do—including their profession—is an extension of that identity. Their work ethic, leadership, integrity, and decision-making process are deeply influenced by their faith. They don’t just work for a paycheck; they work as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23).
2. The Professional Trying to Be a Christian
   On the other hand, a professional trying to be a Christian sees their career as their primary identity. Their faith is secondary—perhaps something they practice on Sundays or when it’s convenient. They may struggle with compartmentalizing their spiritual life and their work life, treating them as separate entities rather than an integrated whole.

The key difference? One’s faith shapes their profession, while the other’s profession shapes their faith.

Key Differences in Practice

1. Purpose and Motivation

• A Christian professional sees work as a calling, a mission field where they can glorify God. Their motivation is not just career success but also Kingdom impact.
• A professional trying to be a Christian often prioritizes career growth, only integrating faith when it doesn’t interfere with professional ambitions.

📖 Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

2. Ethics and Integrity

• A Christian professional will uphold honesty and integrity even when it’s inconvenient. They won’t compromise their values for promotions or financial gain.
• A professional trying to be a Christian may struggle to maintain integrity when faced with challenges, sometimes bending their values to fit into workplace culture.

📖 Proverbs 11:3 – “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.”

3. Handling Challenges and Pressure

• A Christian professional relies on prayer and faith when facing workplace difficulties, knowing that God is ultimately in control.
• A professional trying to be a Christian may resort to worldly tactics like manipulation or compromise to navigate tough situations.

Bridging the Gap: Moving from a Professional Trying to Be a Christian to a Christian Professional

4. Be Bold in Faith – Don’t hide your Christian identity. Find ways to share Christ through your actions and words. (2 Timothy 1:7)
5. Trust God with Your Career – Promotion and success come from God. When you honor Him, He will order your steps. (Psalm 75:6-7)
